Your guide to Crazy Eights

A focus for your next round

The example and rules describe the same game you can play above. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit. Keep the goal in mind before your next move.

What the game asks you to do

Read the position before choosing your next action. Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit.

The steps to play

  1. Each player starts with five cards from a standard 52-card deck. The starting discard is not an eight.
  2. Play one matching card. An eight is always playable; choose its suit using the suit selector before tapping the card.
  3. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit.
  4. Draw one card at a time when needed. Drawing does not end your turn; keep drawing or play a legal card.
  5. The stock is not recycled. With no stock and no legal card, pass. Two consecutive passes end the round in a draw.
  6. The first empty hand wins. New round deals again.

Input guidance

Take a moment to check the current turn. Tap a playable card. Set the suit selector before playing an eight. Draw and Pass have separate buttons. The game area remains available above the explanation.

See how the rules apply

The example and rules describe the same game you can play above. If 5♣ is on top, you can play another club, another five, or any eight. Calling hearts with an eight makes hearts the active suit.

Keep this in mind

A careful first move helps you understand the round. Do not assume that every eight keeps its printed suit. The called suit is shown beside the discard pile.

On this page, how do the controls work?

Tap a playable card. Set the suit selector before playing an eight. Draw and Pass have separate buttons. Keep the current game state in view while applying this rule.

On this page, can you show an example?

If 5♣ is on top, you can play another club, another five, or any eight. Calling hearts with an eight makes hearts the active suit. The instructions above use these same rules.

During a round, which mistake should I avoid?

Do not assume that every eight keeps its printed suit. The called suit is shown beside the discard pile. Keep the current game state in view while applying this rule.

During a round, what rules and limits are used here?

Two-player free play with a local computer opponent. No draw-two stacking or reverse cards. A refreshed page starts a new round. The worked example offers another way to follow the rule.

When I start, how many people can play here?

You vs computer. This is local browser play, not internet matchmaking. The controls work with mouse or touch.

During a round, why can I still play after drawing?

Drawing alone does not finish a turn here. Play a legal card, or continue drawing if needed. No download or player account is required.

During a round, can I pass while I have a matching card?

No. Pass is available only when the stock is empty and your hand contains no legal card. You can start a new round from the game controls.

How do I choose the suit for an eight?

Use the suit selector first, then tap the eight. A new round resets the current game.

What happens when both players are blocked?

If the stock is empty and both players pass consecutively, the round is a draw. The game is played locally in your browser.
